แรงบิด

แรงบิดคือ แรงบิดตัวของแกนหมุนใดๆ มีหน่วยวัดได้หลายแบบ แต่ที่นิยมก็มี 3 แบบ คือ

            ฟุต-ปอนด์ (ft lb):               โดยตัวเลขที่บอกจะเป็นความยาวของรัศมีการหมุน ที่มีแรงผลัก 1 ปอนด์ 
            นิวตัน-เมตร (Nm):               โดยตัวเลขที่บอกจะเป็นแรงผลักในหน่วย นิวตัน ที่รัศมีการหมุน 1 เมตร
            กิโลกรัม-เมตร (kgf m):     โดยตัวเลขที่บอกจะเป็นแรงผลักในหน่วย กิโลกรัม ที่รัศมีการหมุน 1 เมตร

   ซึ่งทั้งสามระบบการวัดแรงบิด มีความสัมพันธ์กันดังนี้

1 ฟุต-ปอนด์ = 0.737265 นิวตัน-เมตร
1 กิโลกรัม-เมตร = 9.8 นิวตัน-เมตร

เมือ่

τ is the torque vector and τ is the magnitude of the torque,

r is the displacement vector (a vector from the point from which torque is measured to the point where force is applied), and r is the length (or magnitude) of the lever arm vector,

F is the force vector, and F is the magnitude of the force,

× denotes the cross product,

θ is the angle between the force vector and the lever arm vector.
